???? Rest in peace Reggie ????

It is with a very heavy heart we must inform all our supporters, that last week we had to bid sweet dreams to Reggie.

Like a lot of big breed dogs, Reggie suffered from arthritis in his back legs. This was closely monitored by both staff and vets, and during his time with us Reggie was tried on various medication to help relieve any pain or discomfort he was experiencing.

Sadly, over the past 6 months Reggie’s legs had been deteriorating. At first it was little changes, such as staff noticing him being stiff following a walk or a play in the pool.
In recent weeks, this had progressed to Reggie visibly struggling to stand on numerous occasions.
His legs were failing him

As any animal lovers will know, their welfare is the most important thing, and as their carers we have to be responsible for ensuring they get the best quality of life possible.
Having witnessed Reggie’s decline, it was decided by the staff members that knew him best, along with our vet who had examined him frequently over the past months, that the kindest thing to do was to end his suffering.

Nobody wanted to see the day where Reggie could not get up at all.. We felt he should be allowed to bow out with what dignity he had left.

You will all be pleased to know that Reggie was spoilt on his last day with us. He had an extra special breakfast, and was treated to his absolute favourite past-time, a splash in his own pool

Having arrived back in 2007, Reggie was one of our longest residents at the Sanctuary. Despite many newspaper and online appeals about him, sadly the right home never came along.

He was a sweet boy who, although he never found a home outside our gates, seemed more than happy to make OAS his forever home. Whether he was out telling off traffic, digging endless holes in his yard, or having a swim in the stream, he certainly made himself right at home here. We feel honoured to call ourselves his family

Thank you to everyone who helped make Reggie’s stay with us a good one. To all our supporters who either sponsored, walked, or simply visited him, we know he would thank you if he could

Good night Reg old timer, you will be greatly missed.
